Usability Evaluation Report
Background Summary
The development a website is a component of EDID6508: Developing Instructional Media. The website was developed as a means of showcasing the skills and competencies developed through the use of various artefacts, over the past three months. The website which will be evaluated is the webpage of Alafia Branker-Baptiste.
Goals
The goal of the usability report is to assess a peer’s website from the course EDID6508: Developing Instrumental Media and provide feedback on the elements of the website.
Methodology
The information for the report was completed by accessing my peer’s website and navigation through the pages to gain an assessment of the website’s functionality and usability. This was cross-referenced with a usability evaluation scoring rubric provided by the course facilitator and can be located in Appendix A. The scoring rubric was completed using the analysis from the results.
Results
The results were analysed using the Web Usability Checklist from Team Success (2021) as well as the detailed rubric given by the course facilitator.
Content and Layout
The website has a clear purpose as stated on the Home page with the skills and competencies to be developed. The website contains descriptive headings as seen on every page or subpage of the website. There are lists and paragraphs found on the Homepage and images are found throughout the website namely on the Homepage, About Me page and contact page. Images are also used to tell a story on the screen casting page and are combined to create PowerPoint presentation on the File Format 11 page. The content on the website is written in English and is easy to understand and contact information is given to contact the creator.
Navigation
The website’s navigation is consistent. The links take you where it states it should go. Links are worded using a description and not a ‘click me’ as noted in Team Success (2021). There are site descriptions on every page and subpage of the website. The site’s URL is memorable as it is the creators’ name.
Background colour and choices
The background and colour choice remain consistent throughout the website. The background is white throughout and does not detract from the content. There is adequate contrast between the text and the background. However on the homepage there is a set of text linked to an external which is somewhat camouflaged into the colour of the background.
Links
Important commands are displayed using buttons as noted in Team Success (2021). These buttons are found on the home page and are shown as ‘Learn More’, ‘Contact Me’ and ‘Explore’. The links on the website’s page are recognizable as they are in grey whilst the regular text is in black. There are no broken links, all links redirect to the appropriate page within the website or an external website.
Fonts
A variety of fonts and font sizes were used. At times this was useful to distinguish between heading and normal text. The font was a bit small in the tables in File format section 1 and 3 as well as in the collaborative tools section.
Graphics and images
The graphics used are related to the theme and topic of the particular pages of the website and are of good quality. No graphics were used for navigation purposes.
Copyright
References and citations are included where necessary, this is seen in the File Format, the instructional video and collaboration tools pages.
Spelling and grammar
There were no spelling or grammatical errors discovered throughout the website.
Bugs and issues
I found the Home page to be a bit busy and crowded where some of the information displayed was also found on other pages or subpages in the website.
Recommendations
My only recommendation would be to declutter the Homepage and make it more streamlined with the theme of that page. Team Success (2021) notes that pages should not be cluttered and related information should be grouped together.
